When The Strong Woman Gets Tired

When Inner Strength Wanes: Finding Resilience and Rest

Some women don’t fall apart when they are tired.
They simply keep going.
They keep encouraging everyone else.

From the outside, everything looks normal.

But inside, they are exhausted from carrying what no one even realizes they’re carrying.

Because when you are known as the strong woman, people rarely ask if you’re okay.
They assume you are. Strength can become a disguise. The stronger she appears, the less people think she needs help.
They assume you can handle it.
They assume you always do.

And that is exactly why the strong woman often suffers in silence.

She is the dependable one. The fixer. The encourager. She solves problems and shows up when people need support. Friends rely on her wisdom. Family counts on her strength.

But rarely does anyone stop to ask who encourages her.

Strong women often become the ones everyone leans on. They know how to comfort others, pray for others, and help carry other people’s burdens. The strong woman isn’t tired because she is weak.
She is tired because she has been strong for too long without a place to rest. Yet when they themselves feel overwhelmed, they sometimes struggle to find a place where they can safely lay their own burdens down.

Sometimes strong women are overlooked precisely because of their strength. People grow so accustomed to seeing them handle everything that they assume they are always fine. They believe she can manage. They believe she doesn’t need help.

The truth is, the strong woman is often bleeding quietly while everyone around her is still applauding her strength.

Behind that steady exterior, she may be hurting. She may be emotionally exhausted, overwhelmed, or simply longing for someone to notice that she needs support too.

Many strong women feel pressure to keep projecting that everything is under control. Somewhere along the way, they learned that strong people are not supposed to show weakness. As a result, they carry their struggles silently.

Even the strongest woman was never meant to carry life alone.
Strength without rest eventually becomes silent suffering.

But Scripture reminds us of an important truth: God never asked us to carry life alone.

Sometimes the woman everyone leans on is the very one who needs a place to lean.

Jesus offers a simple and powerful invitation :

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28 (NIV)

Rest is not something we earn after we finish everything on our list.
Rest is part of God’s design. It is an act of trust.

Sometimes strong women become exhausted not because they are weak, but because they have relied on their own strength for too long. Without realizing it, they become the pillar that holds everything up—forgetting that even pillars need a foundation.

Remember, Jesus never asked us to be the savior. He already took that role.

When a strong woman turns to God and admits she is tired, she is not failing. She is allowing God to restore her. When she pauses, prays, and places her burdens in His hands, she creates space for renewal.

Isaiah 40:31 reminds us that those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. Renewal implies that there will be moments when our strength runs low. That is not a flaw; it is part of being human.

If you are a strong woman who feels tired today, give yourself permission to rest. You do not have to carry everything alone. It is okay to say no. It is okay to take a break and admit when you feel overwhelmed. And it is okay to lean on God for the strength you need.

In fact, that may be the strongest thing you can do.

True strength is not the ability to keep going without stopping. True strength is knowing when to pause,  and allow God to carry what you cannot.

  1. I had to stop and just breathe for a moment after reading this, because it felt like someone finally put words to something I’ve never been able to say out loud.

I’m a mom, and somewhere along the way, ‘being strong’ stopped being a choice and just became… who I am. My kids need me steady. My husband needs me present. And I show up, every single day, because that’s what I do. But there are nights after everyone’s asleep where I just sit in the quiet and feel the weight of all of it, and I don’t even have words for it. Just tired. Deeply tired.

The reminder about Matthew 11:28 hit me in a tender place today. Rest as an act of trust. I’ve never thought of it that way before, but that framing makes it feel less like giving up and more like leaning in.

Thank you for writing this. I needed it more than you know.

    • Thank you so much, Alexa,  for sharing your heart so openly. Your words truly reflect the quiet strength so many women carry every day. Being a mother and showing up for your family with love and steadiness is a powerful testimony, even when it feels heavy.

Those quiet moments at night, when everything slows down, are often when we realize how much we’ve been carrying. I’m grateful that the reminder from Matthew 11:28 spoke to you. Rest is not giving up, it’s trusting God enough to lay our burdens down and let Him renew our strength.

Please remember that even the strongest hearts need rest. May God continue to refresh you, strengthen you, and fill you with His peace. You are not alone.

  2. This truly resonates with me. As women, we often carry so much while still encouraging everyone else, and many people never see the weight we bear inside. This is a powerful reminder that even the strong need rest and that God never intended for us to carry everything alone. Thank you for this encouraging word
